The Children First Leadership Academy Capstone Expedition Program
For Qualifying 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Students
The program begins at the beginning of each 6th, 7th, and 8th grade student’s school year and culminates with a Capstone trip to Northern Arizona (6th), Catalina Island, California (7th), or the North East Coast of the United States (8th). The cost of these trips is paid for through the donations of individuals and organizations who believe in each CFLA student’s success.
Each trip will be a Capstone to that year’s focused STEAM and social studies curriculum and will feature hands-on and face-to-face learning opportunities unique to their locales.
Qualifications – ABC’s
To qualify, students must fulfill the following A, B, C’s:
Attendance – Attend school on-time each day unless there is a justified and timely excused emergency or medical reason. Attendance will be tracked from student’s first day of school to the last day of the school year.
Behavior – Behave in an exemplary manner in the class, on the campus, and in transit to or from the school and not be guilty of violating any school or transportation rules that could lead to Detention or In-School, Out-of-School or Bus Suspension.
Curriculum Mastery – Achieve at least a 2% increase in each benchmark assessments and a 2% increase in AzMerit performance over last year. Maintain at least a “3.0 Grade Point or ‘B’ Average” in all subjects throughout the school year.
Summer School – Attend Summer School on-time every day.
6th Grade: Students will discover the beauty of the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, the San Francisco Peaks and tour Northern Arizona University and the Lowell Observatory in a two day and one night Northern Arizona Extravaganza!
7th Grade: Students will fly to Los Angeles, California then board a ship and travel 21 miles out to Catalina Island where they will spend three days and two nights at the Catalina Island Marine Institute snorkeling, exploring, hiking, boating, canoeing, and studying marine biology before flying back to Phoenix!
8th Grade: Students will fly to the North East Coast of the United States where they will explore key US historic sites in a seven day and six night whirlwind tour of Boston, Massachusetts; New York City, New York; Philadelphia and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; Washington DC; and points along the way in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia! Sites in Boston include many from the Revolutionary War in Lexington, the Boston Harbor, the Freedom Trail, and Bunker Hill. Additionally students will satisfy any cravings for some of the finest epicurean delights at Mike’s Pastries and the North Shore Italian restaurants. Visits to MIT, Harvard, and the USS Constitution will round out the Boston experience. New York City attractions include the 9-11 Memorial and Museum, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, and New York Pizza!!! While in Pennsylvania students will see the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall, the Rocky steps and statue, and eat Philly Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia and capture the deep sentiments of the Civil War in Gettysburg. Washington DC will feature a tour of the Capitol and visits to the White House, the Supreme Court, Smithsonian Museums including the Holocaust, American Indian, Space and Flight, Botanical Garden, and the National Museum of African Americans; World War II, Korean, Viet Nam, Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, King, Roosevelt, Mason, and other Memorials; Arlington Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; and the Pentagon 9-11 Memorial. After touring Mount Vernon and enjoying elegant dining at the Mount Vernon Inn, students will fly back to Phoenix to relish in this life-changing experience.
